Landfill, transfer station or drop-off: what's the difference?
- Landfill
- Where trash is buried. Big landfills are usually privately run (Waste Management, Republic, GFL), take almost anything from anyone and charge by the ton with a minimum.
- Transfer station
- Where trash is collected before it's trucked to a landfill. Most township transfer stations are small, residents-only, open a couple of days a week, and charge per bag or per load. This is what most people mean by "the dump."
- Convenience center / drop-off
- A county drop-off site for recycling, yard waste, tires, appliances and sometimes bagged trash. Often free for residents with a permit sticker.
- Free dump day
- A clean-up Saturday, usually in spring or fall, when a township or county takes bulky items from residents at no charge. Dates are on the state's free dump days page.
